Over 17 Million People in Yemen Suffer Water Poverty

In Yemen, the water crisis has reached devastating levels, affecting over 17 million people who lack access to clean water. For at least half of Yemen’s population, finding safe water for survival means walking long distances daily, depriving children of a normal life and forcing families to migrate to dangerous areas. Amid ongoing war, local conflicts, and poor diets, thousands lose their lives yearly due to waterborne diseases and the absence of safe water.

Empowering Lives through Safe Water Access

There are, however, solutions to combat this crisis. While Yemen lacks permanent rivers, underground sources exist. With the right techniques and knowledge, long-term access to safe water can be achieved even in the remotest areas, bringing water security to thousands. ISRA-UK, in cooperation with locals, invests in long-term solutions in Yemen, including boreholes wells dug up to 25 meters below ground, extracting water from up to 150 meters. These solid-walled wells will last between 50 and 100 years, serving future generations.

Reliable access to safe, clean water means drinking, cooking, washing, watering crops and animals, and making wudu no longer pose a risk of illness or disease. Importantly, women and children no longer have to walk miles and miles to get suitable drinking water.
