Zakat ul-Fitr, or Fitrana
Zakat ul-Fitr, or Fitrana, is a mandatory charitable donation given at the end of Ramadan before the Eid prayer. It is required from every Muslim who has surplus food beyond their basic needs and must be given on behalf of each member of the household.
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) ordained Zakat ul Fitr [Fitrana] to purify the fasting person from indecent words or actions, and to provide food for the needy. It is accepted as Zakat for the person who gives it before the Eid prayer; but it is a mere Sadaqah for the one who gives it after the prayer.
Hadith | Abu Dawud and Ibn Majah
The Prophet (PBUH) specified the amount as one saa’ of food, which is equivalent to four madd—roughly the amount that can be held in cupped hands. When converted to monetary value based on staple foods like flour or rice, the estimated amount is approximately £5 per person.
