What is Qurbani?

Qurbani, also known as Udhiyya in Arabic, means “sacrifice” and is a vital rite in Islam. The term derives from the Arabic word “qurban,” rooted in “qurb,” which means “closeness.” Through the act of sacrifice, Muslims believe they grow closer to God and strengthen their faith.

Qurbani commemorates Prophet Ibrahim’s (AS) dedication to Allah (SWT) and his willingness to sacrifice what was most important to him. It involves the ritual slaughtering of an animal, such as a sheep, lamb, goat, cow, bull, buffalo, or camel, performed in a Halal manner as prescribed by the Qur’an.

Qurbani is conducted after the Eid al-Adha prayer on the 10th, 11th, and 12th days of Dhul Hijjah. The meat from the sacrifice is divided into three parts:

  • A portion for the person performing the Qurbani.
  • A portion for the person’s family and friends.
  • A portion for the needy and poor.

The Importance of Charity During Dhul Hijjah

Dhul Hijjah is one of the four sacred months in the Islamic “Hijri” lunar year. The other three sacred months are Rajab (the 7th month), Dhu’l-Qi’dah (the 11th month), and Muharram (the 1st month).

Voluntary charity, or sadaqah, holds special significance during these days of Hajj. Performing acts of charity is considered one of the highest forms of worship, with even greater rewards during this sacred time.
