A devastating earthquake struck on Friday, September 8, 2023, at 23:11 local time (22:11 GMT). Its force measured a staggering 6.8 magnitude, originating from a depth of 10 km. This seismic event originated in the tranquil, sparsely-populated expanse of the High Atlas Mountains, nestled 71 km (44 miles) southwest of the bustling city of Marrakesh, a beloved tourist destination.

In the aftermath of this cataclysmic event, numerous provinces and municipalities were left in ruins, particularly in rural areas where many structures were crafted from fragile mud, lacking earthquake resilience.

The toll of devastation continues to rise, with the official count of casualties now standing at a heartbreaking 2,000 lives lost, and more than 2,000 individuals suffering from injuries. The impact has rippled through the lives of over 300,000 individuals, a number that is expected to swell as dedicated rescue teams struggle to navigate the rugged terrain and reach isolated mountain villages.

The initial quake’s terror was compounded by a 4.9 magnitude aftershock, which struck just 19 minutes later, intensifying the fear and uncertainty that gripped the residents. Fearing further tremors, many people endured a sleepless night outdoors, finding refuge in makeshift tents or outside their homes.

This seismic event is etched in history as the deadliest Morocco has seen since 1960 when a 6.7 magnitude earthquake claimed the lives of approximately 12,000 people in Agadir. Additionally, it stands as the most powerful quake the region has endured since 2004, when a 6.3 magnitude tremor resulted in a grim toll of at least 628 lives lost in Al Hoceima.

In response ISRA-UK has joined forces with our dedicated partners on the ground, and we implore you to extend your compassionate hand to reach those who need it most in this dire hour. Your donation today can make an immediate difference. Please, let’s unite to bring hope and relief to those affected by this devastating earthquake.
