On the morning of February 6, 2023, a pair of devastating earthquakes with magnitudes of 7.8 and 7.5 struck Southeast Turkey and Northwest Syria. The initial quake hit at 4:17 a.m. as residents were sleeping in their homes, followed by several strong aftershocks.  Areas such as Kayseri, Malatya, Adana, Diyarbakır, Gaziantep, and Hatay in Turkey were affected by the earthquakes. The tremors were also felt in neighboring countries such as Cyprus, Egypt, and Lebanon.

The earthquakes have resulted in a humanitarian crisis of unprecedented proportions, with over 21,000 fatalities and thousands more injured. The death toll continues to rise as rescue efforts are ongoing.

The Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: “Whoever relieves a Muslim of a burden from the burdens of the world, Allah will relieve him of a burden from the burdens on the Day of Judgement. And whoever helps ease a difficulty in the world, Allah will grant him ease from a difficulty in the world and in the Hereafter…”

Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1930, Book 27, Hadith 36

In response to the earthquake disaster, ISRA-UK launched a dual-pronged approach to provide aid to those affected. The first approach was an appeal for essential items such as warm winter clothes, blankets, hot water bottles, women’s sanitary products, baby food, and more. These items will be sent for free via air freight, courtesy of Turkish Airlines. The second approach involves accepting donations, which will be used to purchase emergency aid on the ground in Turkey.

Here’s how your donation will be used:

  • Distributing vital supplies: Your donation could help us distribute essential items such as food, water, and blankets to those struggling to survive.
  • Temporary shelters: The earthquakes have left many homeless and exposed to harsh winter weather. Your donation could help us set up temporary shelters to provide protection and warmth to those in need.
  • First aid and crisis support: your donation could also support our efforts to provide first aid and crisis support to those traumatized by this disaster.

The ISRA-UK team is committed to helping those in need and will be flying to the affected area this Saturday 11th of February 2023 to assess the situation and provide on-the-ground support. Unfortunately, it is expected that the recovery and rebuilding process will take several months, and the need for assistance will remain high.

By supporting ISRA-UK, you can make a meaningful impact in the lives of those affected by this disaster. Your donation will help bring hope and support to those in need.
